Well, so I started this jogging thing seriously now. I tried running every day, but would have wound up killing myself. Seriously. So I’ve decided to run every second day for now. Once I get more fit, I might consider increasing the regularity as I’ll be increasing the distance in any case.

In local news, I was shocked by the South African Constitutional Court ruling that men can’t be raped. They acknowledge that male rape is no less “humiliating, degrading or traumatic”, but still pass that ruling? I don’t understand it.

On a completely different note, I’ve been digging through all the old stuff in my computer and have found some rather embarassing poetry from about ten years ago. In amongst all the stuff I’ll never show to anyone, I did find a few good ones. I’ll put those up soon.

I’ve also got to start packing up everything in the house, since I’ll be moving to the coast (probably) at the end of June. I’m not looking forward to that one bit (the packing, of course). I can’t even ask my partner to help, since he’s already down there at his new job. Now all we need is a house, and I just need to find a job…

Lastly, thank you to LARGEtony, Scott and my big sis for welcoming me to the blogospehere! What I don’t understand is that I’m the techno-freak of the family, yet my sister managed to get a blog up before me.

Jogging, walking, (almost) dying... 0 Comments May 9

Running showWell, so I finally got off the couch last night and started running again. It’s been a good ten years since I last ran, and I really felt it afterwards. It felt like someone had taken sandpaper to my lungs and put itching powder all over my body. I have to say that my body doesn’t hurt as bad today as I thought it would though.

I tried starting up about three months ago, but stopped after only one run. I felt the same way last night, but I have to push through and get my body back in shape. Over the past seven years I’ve managed to go from an okay 86 kg to an unacceptable 104 kg.

I’ve decided to start on a route of about 1.6 km for about two weeks and then adding that same distance every two weeks up to about 8 km. I’ll keep track of my progress with my Nike+iPod kit, and hopefully before year’s end I can be back in shape.

I’ve also cut down on smoking (without realising) from 20+ a day to about 15. This is way less than before I stopped a year ago – I smoked about 30 a day then. I’m not going to coerce myself into stopping again – I’ve accepted that I’ll stop when I’m ready to stop. So please, don’t tell me it’s a bad habit – I know it is.

The last part of the equation is of course a proper eating plan. This will be the hardest part. I mean, who doesn’t like food? It’s not just what I’m eating, but how. I don’t have breakfast, an oat bar around 10:00, a sandwich for lunch, a small yoghurt at around 16:00 and then dinner. The biggest problems are lunch and dinner – to try and replace the sandwich with something healthier and teaching my brain what size portion is actually enough at dinner time. Well, it’s not going to change over night, but I’m going to try.
